Hiking the Trails of Almaguin Highlands for Beginners

Ranging from 1km to 7 km in length these trails found in Almaguin Highlands are perfect for those who want to get outdoors but have small children or are a bit less committal.

Fire Tower Trail — Restoule Provincial Park – at 4.1km in length The Fire Tower Trail takes hikers through forests, across boardwalks and rocky outcroppings to a viewpoint at Amber Lake. Aptly named the trail also features sightseeing the historic fire tower.

High Rock Lookout - Sundridge offers a stunning view of Lake Bernard on this 2.1km walk.

Maple Canyon Trail — Mikisew Provincial Park – for the geologist in the group Maple Canyon Trail features rocky outcroppings with examples of quartz intrusion on it’s 2.3 km trail.

Beaver Meadow Trail — also at Mikisew Provincial Park features wildlife sightings including otter, beaver, and muskrats. Beaver Meadow is a 2 km loop trail around an open beaver wetland.

Brook’s Falls — Emsdale is a short trail that leads to a waterfall and the Magnetawan River, a great spot to cool off on a warm summer day.

Screaming Heads in Burk’s Falls

The Screaming Heads art installation has often been described as the most unique tourist destination in Ontario. Spread across 310 acres consisting of meadows, forests and ponds is an outdoor art gallery composed of concrete sculptures resembling screaming heads. Artist Peter Camani has transformed the trails that wind through meadows, past woods, and ponds on his property where he lives. Camani has graciously opened his private lands to the public by donation to tourists wanting to walk through this unique artisan’s creation set amongst Muskoka North’s beautiful landscape.
